Going “back” to something unknown

It’s been an eventful autumn. I have been so happy to have the chance to work with clients, old and new, as they start to get back to meeting one another in person. I am struck by the intensity of these meetings and the rainbow of emotions that they provoke. There is happiness at being able to meet one another in physical space, some for the very first time. There is trepidation about staying safe, and figuring out how to set or stay inside boundaries of what feels safe for each person as we re-negotiate simple things like greeting one another or sharing food. For some people, staying at home has been a blessing, for other’s it was a curse. And probably for most of us, the impacts and experiences are still raw and full of contradictions.

As I look at the world these days, I remember the wise words that,“you can never go home again.” Even as we start going “back” to old habits like flying, going to an office, eating out with friends inside a restaurant, the reality of what we are going into remains unknown and volatile. We are still in the midst of an uncertain and highly unpredictable situation.

In the rush to “get back to normal” I notice many people attempting to analyze and conceptualize about what happened the past 18 months and to draw conclusions about what that means for the future. There is a powerful desire to put everything into perspective, but the…
